Ethylene demand forecast for the next decade is 3% pa while propylene is forecast to grow at 4-5%, mainly due to its major derivative PP growing exceptionally well. Propylene and is expected to grow at more than 5% in the next decade. As per Chemsystems, ethylene consumption in 2009 was about 110 mln tpa. Additional ethylene required at 3% growth will be just about 3-3.5 MMT while additional propylene required at 4.5% growth would be just about the same. The present production distribution therefore cannot fulfill the increasing demand of propylene. The new massive crackers coming up in the Middle Eastern region are predominantly based on ethane rich gas. Hence the newer capacity additions will be unable to fulfill the additional demand of propylene. Therefore special investments are being made in other dedicated manufacturing processes for propylene.

Vancouver-based Methanex Corp. will be looking to its newly reopened methanol plant in Medicine Hat and its new production facilities in Egypt to help the company overcome production difficulties in Chile.
"Between Medicine Hat and Egypt, we have a 40-per-cent step up in production [forecast for 2011] compared to 2010," said Methanex CEO Bruce Aitken, which will raise its methanol output capacity to five million tonnes from 3.5 million tonnes last year. Methanex, the world's largest producer of methanol, made the decision last fall to spend $40 million US restarting the 470,000-tonne-per-year capacity Medicine Hat plant.

Azerbaijan Methanol Company (Azmeco) is completing implementation of its project on construction of a methanol plant.
Company’s head Nizami Piriyev says that the plant has been built and start-up work is ongoing. "Hopefully, before the end of 2011, we will end fully construction work and commence production of finished products since 2012,” he said.
According to Piriyev, such companies as Mitsubishi, Mitsui and others are ready to buy Azmeco’s methanol.
"In Turkey alone the demand for methanol is 400,000 a year,” Piriyev emphasized.

Saudi Arabia, holder of the world’s largest oil reserves, may report higher income from petrochemical sales in the fourth quarter as global prices rebound amid rising demand from Asia.
Abdul Rahman al Zamil, [the head of Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh based Export Development Center,] expects to see more exports of methanol in coming months after the Chinese government, following a yearlong investigation, decided last month not to impose any anti-dumping duties on Saudi methanol producers.
[John Sfakianakis, chief economist at Riyadh based Banque Saudi Fransi] expects Saudi petrochemical producers to report higher profit in the fourth quarter this year as he expects to see an increase in prices and volume for petrochemical exports to Asia in the coming six months.
